Gee Library Awarded Grant For Second Year
Gee Academic Library at Texas A&M University-Commerce has received grant funding from Texas State Library and Archives Commission that enables the Special Collections Department to continue a project with several area libraries.
This $72,866 grant from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission was among five grants approved for area libraries and regional library systems across the state.
With this grant, the Gee Library "Heirloom: Something Worth Saving, Something Worth Sharing" Project is being funded for the second year.
There are 11 libraries in Hunt, Fannin, Delta, Lamar, Red River, Camp, Rains, and Hopkins counties that are being assisted with digitizing local history artifacts and African-American history and making them accessible online, according to Andrea Weddle, project intern and A&M-Commerce staff member. "We are currently adding more library partners," Weddle said.
The digitized information is uploaded on the A&M-Commerce library website and then can be used by residents in the counties, educators, and others interested.
"We have uploaded about 300 items, photos, older school year books, Cotton Belt Railroad material, and other items," Weddle said.
