1. The encouragement and financial support of research and creative activity on the part of its faculty members is a basic responsibility of Texas A&M University-Commerce. In the implementation of this responsibility, the University provides grants for specific research interests or creative activities of its faculty and professional staff.

2. Research Committee. The University Research Committee will be appointed annually by the President. With the exception of the Dean for Graduate Studies and Research, administrators (including department heads) should not be members of the Research Committee.

3. Eligibility. All full-time faculty and professional staff are eligible to apply for research support.

4. Uses of Grants. Research grants are to be utilized to provide specific individual or group research projects. Utilization of grant funds can be made for, but are not limited to, the following:

a. Reduction in the teaching load of a faculty member.
b. Employment of student research assistants.
c. Purchase of supplies and/or equipment.
d. Travel necessary to conduct research.
e. Items or services of a special nature.

5. Grant Limitations. Grants cannot be used for the following: to support work to be used in obtaining an academic degree or professional certificate; to travel to professional meetings; or to prepare and publish textbooks.

6. Selection Guidelines. The University Research Committee should establish selection guidelines to be followed in awarding Faculty Research Grants and Mini-Grants. The guidelines should be distributed to the faculty yearly.

7. Awarding of Grants. The University Research Committee will discuss and evaluate grant proposals before recommending, through the Vice President for Academic Affairs to the President, the proposals to be funded and the amount of the funding. Funding decisions rest with the President who will announce grant recipients. A written explanation outlining the reasons for nonfunding should be sent to all applicants not receiving a grant.

8. Mini-Grants. The Dean for Graduate Studies and Research may, without University Research Committee approval, evaluate and approve research proposals requesting $1,000 or less.
