Financial Aid

Financial assistance to study art at Texas A&M University-Commerce is available from several sources. The Office of Financial Aid provides information on loans and grants from federal and state agencies, as well as information on competitive University scholarships.

Housing Scholarships

Competitive scholarships are available, too, through the Housing Office, and these can sometimes exempt out-of-state students from non-resident tuition rates.

Scholarships from the Department of Art

The Department of Art has several endowments to help our art and photography students reduce the costs of their education.

Scholarships for Beginning and Continuing Students

Scholarships for Entering Freshmen Students

Entering freshmen are eligible for the scholarships listed above. They are also eligible for scholarships awarded at our annual Art Day, traditionally scheduled for a Saturday in November. This event is a daylong series of activities and workshops in Art and Photography for high school students. It is an opportunity for students to visit the Texas A&M University-Commerce campus, meet the Art faculty and make use of the Art and Photography facilities. Participating students may apply for scholarships that will be awarded by the end of the day. Also, the Photography area has scholarships to incoming freshman through a contest called the High School Shoot Out that is held in late February.

Scholarship Eligibility and Application Procedures

Art Day and Photo Shoot-Out scholarships are reserved for high school students who have participated in that event and intend to major in art or photography at Texas A&M University-Commerce. Information and applications for these scholarships are available from the Department of Art office. Art Day and Photo Shoot-Out is an annual event held on a Saturday in late February.

Students applying for scholarships in art or photography will do so by April 15 for the following academic year. An application consists of the following: A letter of application addressing (1) the reasons for requesting financial aid, (2) the student's background and qualities, and (3) educational and career goals. A portfolio of 5-10 representative works of art in slide or original form. If slides are submitted, they must be placed in plastic sleeves and identified by the applicant's name, title of the work, medium, and dimensions of the original. Texas A&M University-Commerce will return slides, but cannot assume responsibility for returning or otherwise handling original art works. The student should also include names, addresses and telephone numbers of two references who are familiar with the applicant's background, abilities and character. If transferring from another college or university, the student must include official transcripts of all previous academic work.
