2009/2010 Travel Policy and Calendar:

Support for Faculty Travel from the Dean's Discretionary Funds:

These guidelines pertain to funds that support professional travel for tenure-track and tenured faculty only. Please note that travel funds are also available through individual departments.

  • Travel requests will be screened five times during the 2009/2010 academic year:September 11, November 14, 2009, January 15, March 12, and May 13, 2010. Requests that are not funded in one review will be considered in the next review along with new requests.
  • Faculty may make more than one request, but no one individual will receive more than $700 from the dean's discretionary travel funds for the 2009/2010 academic year. Individuals who have not received travel money earlier in the year will be given precedence over individuals requesting a second trip.
  • Funding will be available only for conference registration, hotels, and airfare/travel, not for membership fees, meals or other per diem expenses.
  • Statewide, national, and international trips will be given equal weight in the selection process.
  • Faculty who participate in scholarly activities such as refereed art exhibits and music recitals will be given the same consideration as those participating in traditional academic conferences;
  • If requests for support significantly exceed funds available, priority will be given to untenured faculty.
  • Funding priorities are the following for all tenured and tenure-track faculty:
  1. faculty presenting a paper at an out-of-state national or international conference (max. $700);
  2. faculty presenting a paper at an in-state national or international conference (max.$500);
  3. faculty organizing a panel or hosting a session (max. $300);
  4. miscellaneous requests such as those to attend discipline meetings or conferences (max. $200). These requests will be considered only in the May review. In general, departments will need to fund these activities themselves.

In order to apply for these funds, submit your travel authorization, supporting documentation, and the travel checklist prior to the deadlines shown above.

When submitting claim for reimbursement of expenses, original receipts must be attached to the travel voucher form.

Dean's Teaching Initiative

rts and Sciences faculty often request funding for special projects that do not fall easily into the categories that the dean’s office has historically funded. Many of these requests are to support faculty who wish to enhance their skills in instructional technology or expand their knowledge about teaching. This year, a fund will be available to support teaching-related activities. Applications for this fund have become increasingly competitive. Please read this memo carefully.

During academic year 2009-2010, the dean’s office will set aside $7,500 to support faculty initiatives related to teaching and teaching-related research. Applications may be made for amounts between $100 and $500 to support

  • travel to conferences focused on teaching or professional development (travel to standard discipline-based conferences will not be considered);
  • software, books, or supplies related to teaching or classroom research; and
  • student assistants for teaching-related research or other teaching-related activities
  • development of on line or other mediated forms of instruction

Eligibility: Tenured and tenure-track faculty may apply. If funds remain unspent, full-time ad-interim faculty will be considered.

To Apply: Applicants will submit to the A&S dean’s office a 1-page request outlining how the funds will be used and the way in which they will enhance teaching or student learning. The application should describe the outcomes possible if this request is funded and include a brief budget. The application should also explain whether the applicant has received or applied for other sources of funding for this project.

Applications will be judged by (1) the strength of the connection made to teaching and learning and (2) the clarity of the outcomes described. No faculty member may receive more than $500 during the year; however, two smaller requests may be funded within that amount.

Application Dates: Applications will be reviewed by the dean in two review processes. Applications need to be in by November 9, 2009, or by March 12, 2010. $4,500 will be available for the first review; $3,000 for the second review. Any unused funds from the first review will roll over to the second review. Unfunded applications in the first review may be considered again in the second review.
