Interdisciplinary Studies - Domestic Students
Interdisciplinary StudiesA Master of Arts or Master of Science degree with a major in Interdisciplinary Studies is offered through the Federation of North Texas Area Universities in cooperation with the University of North Texas. This program is designed for students with a particular intellectual interest not met by any specific degree program available through the traditional disciplines.
The Interdisciplinary Studies program involves work in three or more disciplines with a primary area of no fewer than 12 hours, including 595, and a minimum of 6 hours in each allied area. Interdisciplinary programs are developed with an adviser in the primary area and must be approved by the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research. The course requirements for the MA and MS Option I degree are a minimum of 30 semester hours, which includes six hours of thesis. Course requirements for the MS Option II degree are a minimum of 36 semester hours, which include the Research & Literature Techniques course 595 (3 hours).
As with other master's degree programs, a final comprehensive examination is required. The Interdisciplinary Studies program is coordinated by the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, who will approve an appropriate primary emphasis adviser as well as render final approval of the student's degree plan. The primary emphasis adviser is responsible for assisting students in planning their program, setting up and administering the comprehensive examination, and submitting the results of the examination to the Graduate Dean.

- A statement about your goals in life and what type of career you believe would help you to achieve those goals (one or two pages). This statement should include your rationale for the selection of Interdisciplinary Studies and how this selection supports the attainment of your goals. Please consider your background, your talents, and your interests. You might also indicate where you would like to live once you complete your degree at Texas A&M University-Commerce.
- You should conduct research (via the web or various other means) regarding what jobs are available now. You may wish to contact Career Services for assistance in identifying available careers. You may also wish to contact potential employers who are currently working at such jobs. You might ask them which disciplines and courses they believe would best suit your needs and prepare you for your future career.
- After completing you investigation, you should study the course offerings in Texas A&M University-Commerce Graduate Catalog. Based upon the results of your investigation, use the Application Checklist form provided by your Graduate Student Services Coordinator to prepare an informal list of courses, one in which you list the disciplines and courses which both meets your needs and master's degree requirements.
2. An interview may be required by the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research.
