Mayo College
Mayo College
What is Mayo College?
Named for the founder of Texas A&M University-Commerce, Mayo College offers full-time first year students a campus experience that nurtures academic and personal growth. Intended to develop the whole person, Mayo College provides distinctive academic, cultural, leadership and social opportunities. A university education is more than just a pathway to a job. It is a transformative experience that stays with you for the rest of your life.
A Residential Community
Mayo College students live in Whitley Hall, a high-rise on the south side of campus. Planned recreational and social events strengthen the bonds between students experiencing their first year together. Carefully chosen sophomores, juniors, and seniors serve as Peer Mentors, helping students negotiate the ins-and-outs of University life. Specially selected, trained and supervised student tutors assist entering students, helping them gain the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive at A&M-Commerce. All entering students participate in First-Year Success Seminar (FSS). These small seminars provide a sense of belonging as well as reinforcement of important academic skills.
An Academic Experience
Individual courses are not self-contained units. An education is more than just your major. Instead, all you experience at the University will contribute to your education and your later life. Most of your first year will center upon basic courses in varied fields, the University Studies curriculum. These courses broaden your experience, develop your analytical skills, and help you appreciate the connectedness of all areas of knowledge. You may have the opportunity to participate in the Core Cluster program-where two-to-three University Studies courses share instructors, course content is integrated, and students enjoy enrichment of their experience through field trips and deeper interaction with the focus of study. Another possibility is enrollment in a section of FSS linked with another University Studies course. These integrated experiences are available on a first-come, first-served basis. So, apply and register early for a chance to participate.
A Time of Self-Discovery
Are you a leader? A thinker? A dreamer? An organizer? Do you sometimes wonder what you could do if you put your mind to it? Mayo College offers opportunities to explore these different possibilities in an environment that helps you along your path. Leadership, service and growth possibilities are waiting for you. Career exploration and success counseling will help you prepare for life after college. Interest groups, led by Mayo College Peer Mentors, bring together people with common passions. The First-Year Leadership Class (FLC) is a carefully selected group of up-coming campus leaders who study leadership styles, help plan Mayo College events, and may themselves become Peer Mentors during their sophomore year. FLC has a separate application process, so check out the FLC Website for details.
A Tradition of Excellence
Founded in 2000, Mayo College began as a residential college that provided a learning community to selected entering students at Texas A&M University-Commerce. The richness and spirit of the original Mayo College inspired its expansion to include all first-year residential students. The Mayo College experience will build knowledge, skills, friendships, perseverance, and a sense of purpose to carry you forward into the future you chart for yourself.
