Academic Distinction

Undergraduate students completing the requirements for baccalaureate degrees with exceptional scholastic averages may be graduated with academic distinction. Students are recognized at the graduation ceremony with academic distinction based on grade point average calculations at the end of the previous term.

In determining eligibility for recognition, the grade point average will be calculated based on all hours attempted, including all transfer work, and the native grade point average. The lower of the two grade point averages determines the level of attainment. If a student’s last period of enrollment raises his or her average to the level required for distinction, or to a higher level of distinction, the appropriate notation will be made on the academic record and diploma. Likewise, if a student’s last period of enrollment lowers his or her average below the minimum grade point average requirement for distinction, the academic record and diploma will not reflect a distinction level.

The levels of recognition and the grade point averages required for each are:

  • Summa Cum Laude: 3.90 - 4.00
  • Magna Cum Laude: 3.70 - 3.89
  • Cum Laude: 3.50 - 3.69
